The playing of boardgames has become a quite common free-time activity here in Germany, with well-known publishers like Ravensburger or ASS supplying a basic choice of games for the past few decades. To promote the hobby, the Spiel des Jahres-Awards was established in 1979 in order to present each year a game of outstanding quality.
However, much has changed in the year 1995 when "Die Siedler von Catan" was released - a new kind of family boardgame which vitalized the somewhat erratic games market. Millions of people now discovered the hobby of playing boardgames, and following the wake of the Settlers quite a few German games publishers jumped aboard and joined the fray, resulting in a new variety of boardgames which was so far unheard of.
Below, you will find quite a few reviews of German games which were written either by me or my G@mebox fellows. Many of the well-known German games were tested and reviewed by us, so you will have a broad choice of games which you cane browse through.
If you would like to learn a bit more about the history of German games, I would recommend my article "The Story of a Boardgamer" which I wrote for an online magazine a few years ago.
Instead of browsing through the list of games below, you might also opt to browse through the list of award-winning games. This should make it much easier for you to find some of the really exciting games!
